Big explosive holes in the middle of cities are terribly emotive. Birmingham 1974 springs to mind. Not the obvious one, I know. Thing is, the new Bull Ring caused more havoc, and for all we know, more deaths. We wouldn't be told that sort of thing though, would we?
not sure about the deaths thing - are you talking about the pub bombings? Oh God, you *are*, aren't you? I was about 11, and that was one of the first news story to have any real impact on me. I didn't get to know Birmingham until the 80's - I liked the Bull Ring (I didn't have to live in Birmingham, though)...I just thought that (particularly in the late 80's) it had this whole third world/bladerunner crossover feel to it...I used to go with my punk mates to buy Kava Kava and crazy colour, then down to forbidden planet for the latest Swamp Thing....
